Benlysta

F.D.A. Approves Benlysta, a New Lupus Drug

The first new drug to treat lupus in more than half a century won approval from the Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday, offering a new option for people with the often debilitating immune system disease.

The drug, Benlysta, was developed by Human Genome Sciences and will be marketed by that company and GlaxoSmithKline.
The approval follows setbacks suffered by many other companies developing drugs for lupus. Doctors and patient groups said that having a new drug come to market could encourage other pharmaceutical companies to pursue the disease.
“It’s important to the field to have an approved product,’’ said Dr. David S. Pisetsky, a professor of medicine at Duke University and a scientific adviser to the Lupus Research Institute, which finances efforts to develop treatments.

The only drugs now approved to treat lupus are aspirin, approved in 1948, Plaquenil, a malaria drug, and corticosteroids. Plaquenil and corticosteroids were both approved in 1955. There are several other drugs that doctors use off-label that appear to have some effectiveness.
Approval was expected because an advisory committee to the F.D.A. had endorsed the drug in November by a 13-to-2 vote, despite reservations of many on the committee that the drug was only marginally effective.
About 11 patients must be treated for one to benefit, according to data from the clinical trials of the drug. The drug was not tested in people with the some of the most severe forms of the disease, involving active damage to the kidneys or central nervous system.
African-Americans, who have a higher incidence of the disease, did not seem to respond to treatment with Benlysta, but too few of them participated in the trial to draw definitive conclusions, according to the F.D.A. Human Genome Sciences has agreed to do another study to assess the effectiveness and safety of the drug in people of African descent.
The companies have not yet announced the price of Benlysta, but analysts expect it to be about $35,000 a year. Analysts generally expect worldwide sales to eventually exceed $2 billion a year. But sales are expected to be slow at first because insurers might balk at paying for the drug, at least until patients try less expensive alternatives.

Jose Canseco

Jose Canseco is Ready for Primetime

So...Donald Trump can see the future right?

Given the crop of crazies he has put together for this go 'round of "The Celebrity Apprentice", he had to have known back in October that this week's headlines were going to be dominated by tiger blood and "winning".

Think about it...who else can compete with the likes of Charlie Sheen when it comes to garnering airtime?  Gary Busey, NeNe Leakes and, of course, Hall of Very Good favorite Jose Canseco...that's who.

Now, it goes without saying that I'll have the feed bag strapped on and my ass in the chair Sunday night to watch the premiere...especially given the prominence of Canseco in the show's promos.

Heck, Jen Harper over at BuddyTV made her list of 25 Reasons to Watch the New Season of "The Celebrity Apprentice" and the former slugger was on it...three times!

10. Jose Canseco's realization that he doesn't have any friends. That's what happens when you accuse America's favorite pastime of sippin' on gin and juice minus the gin.

23. The burgeoning bromance between Jose Canseco and David Cassidy. "Jose, I want to tell you ... you're strong and very, very intelligent with a lot of integrity ... and I love you." OK, I added that last part.

25. Jose Canseco's bedazzled blazer that he bought with the money from "Juiced."

I guess Canseco's appearance on the show begs the following question...how long will the 1988 American League MVP last in Trump boardroom.  Go ahead and vote!

But before you do that...watch the preview of the man who has "lived life ten times over".

Niki Taylor

Niki Taylor: “I Would Love To Have Another Baby”

Niki Taylor is one of the most successful international models of all time. The gorgeous mother-of-three had her twin boys – Jake and Hunter – at the tender age of 19. Now in her mid-thirties and happily married to NASCAR driver Burney Lamar, Niki has become a mom again to daughter Ciel, who turns 2 in March.
Photobucket
The supermodel mom opened up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about their “crazy” household of raising teens and a toddler, her upcoming appearance on Celebrity Apprentice airing on NBC this March, and her hopes to welcome another child one day.
CBS: How is baby Ciel doing? What is she into??
NT: “Baby Ciel is amazing! I am so in love with her. She turns two on March 4th and she is into everything! She has the energy of Jake and Hunter, when they were two, combined. I’m always saying, ‘Don’t touch this,’ or, ‘Put that back.’ Ciel loves Dora the Explorer, Oliva (on Nick Jr.) and Timmy Time (on Disney). She also loves to color and playing with playdough. Although, Burney and I have to watch her with the playdough because she still sometimes tries to eat it and the playdough gets everywhere!
Ciel is a good ‘mommy’ to her dolls. She loves her dolls! She also loves to run and sprint. About a year ago we retired her stroller. The moment she could walk, she did, and would have nothing to do with the stroller. Even when Burney and I are in the airport with her- there she is walking beside me. No stroller!”
CBS: How are your boys doing? Are they helpful with their baby sister? What are they into? Have you conquered the ‘tough’ topics with them yet?
NT: “Jake and Hunter are your typical 16-year old boys. They are learning to drive and both have girlfriends. They are in a band called The Tribe of Strews and are really into their music. Their band has an alternative feel to it and they just had their first concert. They get a kick out of Ciel and are very helpful with her. Jake, Hunter, and I have a very open relationship, so we have already covered those ‘tough’ topics.”
CBS: What has been your experience with having children in your late teens and then again in your 30′s. Did you feel more ‘ready’ for motherhood in your 30′s?
NT: “In my late teens and 20’s I had a lot more energy. It was harder with Jake and Hunter because I had to go straight back to work. Having Ciel in my 30’s has been nice, and I can enjoy motherhood more because I don’t have to jump right back into work.
Jake and Hunter were definitely a blessing in my life, but I would advise women to wait until their 30’s to have children because in your 30’s you know who you are, usually are in an amazing relationship, and know more of what you want for your children.”
CBS: What’s it like having kids at both end of the spectrum (toddler and teenagers)?
NT: “It is really crazy all the time! There is never a dull moment and I am enjoying my children at all stages; both driving and potty training!”
CBS: How do you balance family and a career? Do you have frazzled mom moments?
NT: “I don’t really have frazzled mom moments because I have an amazing husband. Burney and I do date night once a week, so that really helps me to not have those ‘frazzled mom moments.’ I also have a sitter that comes when I need a break or just a lunch date with a girlfriend. I think it is important to take that time for yourself.”
CBS: You’re one of the most recognizable cover models. How did modeling enrich your life? If your daughter decides to follow in your footsteps, would you support her? What kind of advice would you give her?
NT: “Modeling has provided me with so many opportunities and I have truly had a blessed life because of my career. I started working at such a young age, that it has now given me the opportunity to take a step back and just be a mom. I am thankful to modeling for many things, but especially that.
If Ciel decides to step into the modeling world I would absolutely support her. At this
point though, it looks like she is going to be playing some type of sport! She can never
sit still and is a tomboy. My advice to Ciel is and will be, as soon as you stop having fun doing an activity, let’s stop doing it.”
CBS: How do you and your husband make time for each other with a busy family.
NT: “Burney and I have date nights. Every Sunday after dinner we sit and talk, go over
our schedules for the week, etc. For dates we go to the movies, new restaurants, the
shooting range, ride motorcycles (when it is nice outside), and cook together. We try to
pick one new recipe a week and cook it — from grocery shopping for what we need, to
preparing the meal, to eating it together.”
CBS: You’ve hinted at having another baby. Are you hoping for another girl or a boy?
NT: “I would love to have another baby. I don’t care if it is a boy or girl. I will be happy with whatever God brings me.”
CBS: If you are working on any other projects or with any charities, please feel free to discuss.
NT: “Right now I am on a tour with Reader’s Digest called “We Hear You America.” Reader’s Digest is visiting 100 towns in 100 days to provide financial and promotional support to communities that have been affected by the difficult economic times. I am visiting the top 10 cities. I have already been to New York and Atlanta; my next stop is Tampa.
I also work closely with the American Red Cross. All of my winnings on this season of
Celebrity Apprentice, which premiers March 6th on NBC, will go to the American Red Cross.
I am also speaking at their Tiffany Circle National Women’s Leadership Summit in
June. I am really excited about that event.
I continue to model for various magazines and publications—Nordstrom, Macy’s, Saks
5th Avenue, FutureClaw, etc.”

Attitude Seeds

Attitude Seed Bank - Review

attitude seeds
This was my first order from Attitude Seeds and I ordered two strains and received a couple of free seeds. I purchased Hash Passion (non fem) Ceres Kush (non fem) and received a single free Kannabia Smile seed (feminized) and a single Kannabia Special seed (feminized).

The order was processed promptly and professionally and arrived in 3 weeks (USA/ South West). The stealth packaging left a bit to be desired, I paid extra for stealth but let’s just say that there was really nothing stealth about it. Had the customs agent simply opened the package the seeds would have been immediately visible. That said, I received the seeds so what else can I say except it worked out, thank goodness. I won't detail the method they used for obvious reasons but perhaps they can work on it.

I planted all the seeds and had a near 100% germination rate; additionally I grow via hydro.

Both feminized free seeds also geminated and both turned out to be female, a wonderful free bonus.

I do have concerns regarding seed quality and consistency when it comes to being true to strain type. As a 7 year grower (both hydro and soil) I have cultivated countless strains and what I can say about them all is that despite being grown from seed all of my previous strains (from other seeds banks) were clearly related and shared similar traits and characteristics, i.e. length of time to flower, height, length of time to finish, quality of bud, resin production, scent etc.

Both the Hash Passion and Ceres Kush strains each had one seed that was clearly NOT from the same strain. Both of these seeds developed into what can only be described as something you would find growing by the side of a highway. Both grew three times as large as their siblings and looked nothing like the their siblings.

Let me begin with Hash Pa ssion as this strain has other faults beside the one rogue seed. First, never in my years of growing have I had such a skewed male to female ratio, out of 10 seeds planted three were female. The three females took nearly a month to show their gender placing them weeks behind the other strains. Moreover, after 3 weeks they finally showed what looked like female Pistillate but at the same time what looked like male stamen within the leaves. I though perhaps hermaphrodite but NO, the cluster of what I thought was “balls” ended up exploding into a cluster of pistillate flowers. Not a single pistillate but clusters of pistillates. Never have I seen such a thing on a female plant.

The rogue Hash Passion plant grew very tall despite being indica dominant. Its leaves were odd in shape and HUGE, it grew no branches just a single long stem. The initial cluster of pistillates at the top was it with no signs of being either gender toward the bottom of the plant. Moreover and most odd it had no scent even when I rubbed the leaves and zero resin. A freak of a plant is all that I can describe it as.

The Ceres Kush rogue on the other hand had a ridiculous number of stems with tiny airy bud sites everywhere yet nothing that looked like it was going to produce any considerable quantity or quality of smokeable product. The height was purely sativa, at one point I had to cut a 1/3 of it to keep it in range of the light. Its leaves were very slender and long – very sativa. Ceres Kush is marketed as “pure indica”.
I had to destroy both the rogue females as they took up too much space, light and food from the producing plants and frankly I doubt that either would have produced anything worth smoking. I have never in 7 years had to destroy a female plant because its quality was so poor.

On a positive note, with the exception of one Ceres Kush plant which also looks nothing like her siblings but is doing well, the remaining females are healthy and looking lovely, true to strain and type. Ceres Kush had a normal and acceptable male to female ratio.

Perhaps my experience is a “one off” so I will give Attitude Seeds another shot with different strains and look forward to the result. Lucky for me the two free seeds made up for the two rogue seeds yet it seems a bit odd.
